Fishtail Air carries out deceased Japanese Climber’s body from Naya Kanga Peak

A 63 year old Japanese woman- Masue Yoshida and her Nepalese Guide- Kumar Rai were on their way up to the summit of Naya Kanga peak 5,844m, 30 kms north of Nepal´s capital Kathmandu. They encountered an avalanche and couldn’t make it out. They were both killed on Saturday afternoon-the 4th of June.

Fishtail Air was notified and Captain Ashish Sherchan took in charge of the mission. On the 8th of June he took off towards Naya Kanga on our AS350 B3-AJI along with rescue technician Tsering Pande Bhote-a 6 times Everest summiter. After a rekkie up at 18000ft they had to call it off due to weather reasons. Early hours of 9th of June didn’t meet up to the required weather minima either. They tried again this morning, the 10th of June with the Sling equipments installed on the bird. They took off from Kathmandu Airport early initially for the base at Langtang airfield and then headed for Naya Kanga Peak whereby they performed a rekkie and spotted the body of the deceased Ms. Masue at 18000ft. Rescue technician Tsering was then underslung by the helicopter. The duo in co-ordination performed a sling recovery of the body from. Captain Ashish airlifted them to the base at Langtang airfield. Here the body was unhooked and fastened inside the cabin. Thereafter they flew it back to Kathmandu where Ms. Masue’s family members were waiting for her body.

Human Cargo Sling operation in Nepal was initiated in November, 2009 when famous Slovenian Climber Tomaz Humar was found dead on the remote Mountains of Lantang region. The operation was led by Swiss company Air Zermatt. There after Fishtail Air and Air Zermatt collaborated to advance helicopter rescue in the Himalayas. Fishtail Air crew received Human Cargo Sling training on various occasions at Air Zermatt, Switzerland. Air Zermatt team have also visited Nepal frequently and were stationed here past season for Sling training and operation.

This special advanced technology of helicopter rescue  can be applied when there is a need for evacuation not just for Mountain rescue but also for various natural calamities and other wise like River floods, Landslides, Road accidents, Fire etc. We are privileged to be a pioneer and currently the only private company to specialize in Human Cargo Sling operation through a helicopter in Nepal.
